Daniel Simon Explains the Design Process of the Tron Lightcycle

Category : Concept Car, Videos

When Automotive/Concept Designer Daniel Simon was tasked to update the iconic lightcycle from 80′s cult hit Tron, the task seemed daunting.  Two decades had passed since the first film was released, and with CGI technology advancing at an exponential rate the styling direction for the sequel’s vehicle had to both reflect the change and retain the heritage of the first.

In this clip, Simon reveals his process for designing the new icon, showcasing his sketching and theme development along the way.  Have a gander and get ready for the 3-D epic deploying next week.

[Video] Interview with Gael Buzyn, Cadillac Interior Design Manager

Category : Autoshows, Concept Car, Design, Videos

Interiors of concept vehicles are possibly heads and tails more challenging to design than the exteriors.  The daunting task of creating an interior that is both highly innovative and beautiful, while at the same time being comfortable as the driver’s home away form home, is one that shouldn’t  be undertaken lightly.

Gael Buzyn, Interior Design Manager for the Cadillac Urban Luxury Concept (ULC), debuting at the LA Auto Show, was recently pinged about just that topic.  How do you make a vehicle’s interior engaging, meaningful and new?  In the clip, Gael discusses the intent behind the creation, as well as how it possibly foreshadows not only Cadillac but also the luxury market as a whole.

Interviewed by Adam Barrera of highmileage.org and Nick Saporito and Alex Villani of GMInsideNews.

[Thanks, Adam!]

Tutorial Monday: Automotive Speed Painting for Beginners

Category : Tutorial, Videos

We have a very special tutorial this week.  CDF contributor and founder of Driven Mavens, Arvind Ramkrishna, has graciously created a tutorial video for his readers about setting up the foundations to a successful vehicle digital painting.  Though the video showcases painting an exciting car race scene from beginning to end, the principle techniques can be applied to any digital painting.

Have a gander at the inspiring video, get Photoshop loaded up and play along, and be sure to check out the step-by-step article over at DrivenMavens.

[Thanks, Arv!]

Video: Cars 2 Official Trailer!

Category : Videos

We loved the first Cars movie, as I’m sure most of our readers did.  It was a natural fit for Pixar to create a sequel.  There isn’t much more to say except that the sequel, coming this Summer and as evidenced by the above trailer, includes spies, guns, explosions, and metal detectors.

June, hurry up!

Tutorial Monday: Speed Painting Alien Ships in Photoshop

Category : Tutorial, Videos

Speed paintings are always a blast to watch, even if they sometimes take place too fast to understand what’s going on.  Sometimes, however, it’s the substance and not the exact steps that get the job done efficiently in relaying what we’d like to learn or inspire us.

That’s the case with this latest one that a user sent us.  The Photoshop speed painting, though extremely quick and set to fast-paced drum and bass, employs a method of ideating shapes for alien ships using self-created brushes and rendering over brush strokes.

Very, VERY cool way to quickly ideate form!

Check back every Monday for a great new toot, and if you have one you’d like to make us aware of please feel free to send it along. (Visit our contact page!)

Tutorial Monday: 3-D Sketching With Clay

Category : Videos

We love sketching on paper.  It allows us to quickly create forms and express our ideas.  Sometimes, though, creating a model in 3-D is just as creative, just as expressive.  The fine folks at Kolb have a special plasticine (clay) that they work with, InDeClay (INdustrial DEsign Clay), that they use to create their models.  In these two videos, they use the material to create a car.  The video provides several great tips and how-tos for working with it and similar materials, from initial volume to finer details.

Have a look at part one above, and part two below, of the great tutorial.

Chris Bangle Talks Design in Documentary Vid

Category : Videos

It’s hard not to like Chris Bangle.  As one of the most influential designers of the last 30 years, he led BMW (for 17 of them) through some of the most intriguing design trends and changes.  Whether you like the direction he took or not, he continues to bake his passion for design into the inspiring of others.

This latest short documentary video, produced by Inframe.tv, dives into his thought process and shows off that passion.  Shot during his recent time in Australia, the video is a short, albeit captivating look into his mind.

Tutorial Monday: Audi C7 in Photoshop

Category : Tutorial, Videos

We love tutorials.  They can help us better our analog or digital sketching skills, inspire us, or can just be good to see how other Designers are approaching similar sketching habits.

Each week we plan on posting a new tutorial, whether video or step-by-step images, or anywhere in between.

This week’s video is by BartzConcept on Youtube, as he aims to sketch out a concept Audi A7 in Photoshop CS4.  The toot (that’s short for tutorial!) shows the use of brushes and gray scale sketching to create the form and proportion, before finishing with the addition of color and lighting for the details.  The vehicle is glossy, but so are our dreams about it.

Check back every Monday from here on out for a great new toot, and if you have one you’d like to make us aware of please feel free to send it along. (Visit our contact page!)

Enjoy.
