Misunderstood Classics – Alfa Romeo Milano/75

Category : Design, Fetishing, Production Car, Racing

I wonder how this car would have fared with a conventional rear end solution. Or an ergonomically sound interior. Or headlamps that didn’t implore, “Won’t you be my friend?”  We’ll never know.  Still, despite all its flaws, the Milano (also sold as the 75 in Europe) managed an impressive seven year run.

[Tutorial] Rendering a Car on Spliced Construction Paper

Category : Fetishing, Racing, Tutorial

Trust me, rendering a car on construction paper is not child’s play.  There are a few advantages, like the velvety-smooth finish and the ease of splicing.  But it’s also quite delicate — so delicate, I burst a left rear tire! Click on the image above to see the step-by-step process for this very orange ’75 March.

[Tutorial] Rendering a Car on Spliced Canson

Category : Fetishing, Racing, Tutorial

Ah!  Tutorials!  I knew I forgot something.  This vintage F1 rendering was done with blue, light gray and warm steel canson — all spliced together.  How is this accomplished?  Click on the image above to find out.  Also, you may want to play this video in the background while you look at the step-by-step photos.  Trust me on this one  (click here to see other canson rendering examples at Driven Mavens).

Why Alfa Romeo Should Give F1 Another Shot

Category : Fetishing, Racing

I think I speak for Alfa Romeo enthusiasts everywhere when I say that this marque belongs in Formula One Grand Prix racing.  Now. Yes, I know.  I’m dreaming.  But at least allow me to present my case…

CDF Video Library – The Saga of Formula One – Volume 1

Category : Racing, Websites

Two weeks ago, we reviewed Lap of the Gods, arguably one of the best F1 videos ever produced.  Now, Terrific Stuff brings us The Saga of Formula OneVolume 1, a cornucopia of footage, interviews and anecdotes.  Alain Boisnard’s films and the voice of Bob Constanduros comprise two programs:

CDF Video Library – Lap of the Gods

Every time I see the front of Cobo Hall (what I like to call the Q*bert facade), the first thing that comes to my mind is the image above:  Nelson Piquet slamming down through the gears as he approaches Washington Boulevard.  After several sharp turns and a quick trip through the tunnel, he unleashes the full fury of his Honda V6 along the Detroit River.  Everything is running smoothly.  Then, out of nowhere, WHAM! A slower car trips up Piquet, sending him into a barrier.  The voice of F1, Murray Walker, quips, “Oh, well.  It can happen to the best, can’t it!  We’ll turn a blind eye to that one, Nelson!”

New Leno Show Brings Car Races to Prime Time

Category : Events, Racing

tonight-show-jay-leno

We know Jay Leno loves cars.  We were hoping he’d have had a hand in helping to bring Top Gear to the US, but will have to settle for the news that he will include cars and stars (together) on his new primetime show.  Speaking at a press event for the show, Leno extrapolated on his new format, which includes an advertiser-friendly “Green Car Challenge” race segment pitting celebrities against each other.

Other segments will include the familiar Jay-walking and funny headlines, as well as Daily Show-esque taped correspondent shorts.

Car racing on primetime.  Only Jay could manage to save us from an American Idol without Paula!

The Joy of Sketch!

Post_it note sketches

Thumbnails are great way to crank out several sketches when exploring options to create a larger rendering or piece of art.  I started sketching on post-it notes for a little while and really had a lot of fun doing it.  I used a 3X3 post-it note and try to squeeze in 3 sketches per post-it.  It helps you to work out your perspectives ,views, and rough composition without getting into the details.

Tutorials: I Feel the Need….the Need for Speeeeed

Category : Fetishing, Racing, Sketch P*rn

Paintings that is!  So I thought I would  switch gears and show a quick speed painting tutorial.  Nothing too fancy….enough to get the idea across.  This digital illustration was created using Photoshop; reminiscent of the “Fast and the Furious” or EA’s “Need for Speed” series.

So there are a few elements to consider when creating a typical illustration.
