Car & Driver Grades the Automotive World’s Design Studios

Category : Design, News

Who has the best Design Studio in the automotive industry?  Who has the worst? While that question is much more complicated to answer than just a name drop — many levels of marketing and bureaucracy change the design of a vehicle away from the Designer’s vision before it ever hits the streets — Car and Driver have taken it upon themselves to at least grade the studios on their efforts.

C&D avoids conversation about innovation, craftsmanship and human connection to focus only on aesthetics and proportion as to what makes a Design Studio good or bad.  The mass media (and unfortunately even some Studios themselves) believe Design to be just a visual thing, negating the actual problem-solving that is involved.

The top scorers: Jaguar/Land Rover (A), Ferrari (A-), and GM (A-)

The low end: Toyota (D+), Honda/Acura (C-)

Buick Regal Sports Tourer On the Way?

Category : Autoshows, Big 3, Fetishing, News, Production Car

Well maybe it is and maybe not, but one thing is for sure. I have seen the better looking Opel Insignia Sports Tourer driving around a lot lately. Not just the same one over and over again either. All different colors in a variety of locations. This usually means one thing,  its coming.  I won’t be surprised if it shows up at this years Detroit Auto Show.  Station wagons Sports Tourers have been a tough sell in the states but I think Americans are beginning to unknowingly cave in to the idea. I will leave the rest of that theory for a later post.  Pictured above is the bulked up Regal GS version which better make it if GM plans to liven up Buick.

More pics after the jump of the tamer version…

Local Motors’ Pacific Northwest Winners

Category : Competitions, News

Our friends at Local Motors have just announced the winners of their recent Pacific Northwest competition.  The comp, aimed at designing a vehicle for the “beautiful extremes” found in the region — earth, wind, water, fire — with the principle idea of thriving in the elements, received over 75 unique concepts.

The winning entry, Pierre Gimbergues’GAIA” concept, is a four-seat roadster dedicated to letting the wind flow through our hair as we traverse the trails heading to our mountain-bike starting points.  The vehicle’s high ride height are further accentuated by the definitive shoulder-to-body break, in which the upper portion of the vehicle’s bodyside is defined by an elemental color (green, red, blue, brown) and the lower by a darker, textured material capable of surviving the pounding of the terrain.

Recently, the quickly-growing LM has noted that any of the concepts that win a competition have the ability to become a future vehicle, should there be enough desire and feedback to do so.  Time will tell if the GAIA will be seen on the road, but it’s a promising start.

Other winners included Olivier Poulet’s “PANGEA” in 2nd Place and Marc Senger’s “Pacific Motors Rove” in third.
