Hands-On: Gran Turismo 5

Category : Fetishing

The (mis)advantage of being a car designer who happens to write about games is that though I’m overly-ambitious about racing games, I’m also overly-critical. I prefer my car games being purposefully arcade-y or realistic simulations; it’s Mario Kart or Forza, and nothing in-between.

With Gran Turismo 5 finally, finally, FINALLY being released this Fall, it was the perfect time go see what I would hope would be a near-finished product at E3. And, if anything, Sony certainly threw in the kitchen sink when presenting it to me.

You’d think they’d have learned by now, but our friends at RoundAbout Show asked us to be on yet again!

“Why were you on the show,” you ask? Well, I was asked to be a part of it to discuss all things E3, from the gadgets and games to the car-influenced gaming that I had the opportunity to try out.

… and nevermind my often flailing arms. It can be hard to showcase what Kinect does over the air.

[Special thanks to Eric, Craig, Ben, Michelle, and Colin for having me on!]

Cool Cars You’ve Never Heard Of – 1975 CitiCar

Category : Autoshows, Production Car

At a show dominated by muscle cars and land yachts, I was quite shocked to see this red cheese wedge zip by, hardly making a whisper.  Turns out I’ve seen this car on Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood.  Can you say forty to fifty miles per charge?  No, friend.  This is not the Neighborhood of Make-Believe.

FORMFREU.DE – The CDF Interview

A few weeks ago, we featured formfreu.de as our Web of the Week.  This blog has generated quite a buzz in design circles, most notably for its amazing photos and great attention to detail.  Formfreu is the brainchild of German designers Thomas Sälzle and Markus Haub.  They recently took a quick time out to talk to Car Design Fetish about their process, their vision, and what drives them as designers…

Ford Start Concept

Category : Autoshows, Big 3, Concept Car, Crit, Fetishing

At this years Ward’s Auto Interior Conference held in Dearborn the other day J Mays was the key note speaker and brought a little something special to our shores.  The Ford Start Concept was on hand for the first time in the states after its debut at the Beijing Auto Show a few weeks ago.  This concept would definitely give Mini and the Fiat 500 a run for their money.  Look past the fuzzy cell phone pics and hit the jump for some fetish thoughts.

Formula One Helmets – A Designer’s Perspective

Category : Design, Racing

When it comes to Formula One helmets, less is definitely more.  This is a principle that seems to be lost on a whole generation of drivers.  Over the past 50 years, F1 helmet designs have become increasingly complex garish — much like the cars themselves.  I used to be able to identify any F1 driver by his helmet inside of a half second.  Now, I haven’t got a clue. Everything seems to be one big spaghetti junction of hot red, neon green and, of course, random advertisments.  This makes me long for a time when F1 helmets were closer to Piet Mondrian paintings than, say, tribal tattoos.  With that in mind, let’s take a look back at some timeless compositions which prove, without a doubt, that less is more.
