Influencial Designers Discuss “When Ugly Meets Lovely”

Category : Design, Videos

What makes a design “beautiful”?  Ugly?  Why do consumers choose one product over another based on appearance and styling?

As part of a viral campaign for the Nissan Cube, Nissan of Europe has asked that same series of questions to several influential Design minds.  Hosted by Design Museum director Deyan Sudjic and Nissan Europe Design Director Alfonso Albaisa, the series of videos brings together some of the Design world’s most respected and well-known people to discuss how designs can sometimes polarize opinion.

The above video is based on the London “symposium” and brings in product designer Richard Seymour and graphic designer Morag Myerscough to discuss/debate.

52-in-10

Category : Fetishing

Have you heard?  It’s 2010!  Yup, time for the annual New Year’s Resolution promise (that usually is broken by March).

I had to think for a while about what kind of resolution I could make in the automotive world.  Normally this time of year my resolution revolves around drinks.  In 2009 I had chosen 52 beers in one year — which I happily completed by May.  In 2007 I had 52 martinis.

The inevitable dawned on me: 52 unique car drives in a year.  As a car designer I found it a natural fit.  While many of these will be of the “hey neighbor, can I borrow your 1998 Town & Country for the afternoon” variety, at least I will be able to try all manner of vehicle varieties.  I’ll be visiting dealerships along the way to try some newer rides as well.

The goal: 52 test drives of 4-wheeled vehicles in 2010.

The output: short write-ups of said vehicles.

The first will probably be my 2003 Nissan Murano.  Expect that this week.

Let the resolution begin!

Site Launch: Driven Mavens

Category : Fetishing, Websites

Automotive design tutorial websites are a bit of a rarity in the world.  Designer Techniques, ID Sketching, and Car Body Design are probably the most well known of the lot, but none capture the full automotive design experience from start to finish.

Arvind Ramkrishna, CDF’s Contributing Editor and fellow podcaster, noticed the gap.  Utilizing his passion for sketching as a driving factor, this week he launched his automotive tutorial and art website Driven Mavens.  From start to finish, Arvind (and in the future, guest designers) will showcase the optimal techniques for teaching designers and enthusiasts how to sketch, create, and design vehicles.  A sort of “online academy” DM already has a few terrific tutorial videos and will expand to other aspects of the Automitve Design industry down the line.

Join us in giving Arvind a virtual High Five as we celebrate the launch of Driven Mavens!

2011 Ford Focus

Well the long awaited Ford Focus is here and is going to make an impression. There is definitely a lot to take in with this global (80% common parts) Focus.  I think everyone will find areas they like and some they don’t.  This design was collaborated on between Europe, United States and Asia and I find myself trying to find who had influence on what part.  Overall the one thing I feel is missing on the exterior is “refinement.”  There is so much going on and there doesn’t need to be.

MINI Beachcomber Concept

Category : Fetishing

m2

The Mini Beachcomber is a first look at the upcoming Countryman.  Just fill the gaping hole in the side and throw some all-seasons on it.  This is a bigger Mini that will actually seat four full sized adults and tease you with the thought of going off road.  For me this is a welcomed addition and I am excited to see it on the road.

Watch head of MINI Design Gert Hildebrand introduces the Mini Beachcomber.

Audi Type C Roadster Pedal Car

audi

Finally an Audi for all the kiddos out there.  This $13,000 toy is an awesome replica of a 1936 race car.  The roadster contains over 900 pieces with an aluminum body all put together by the Audi toolmaking division.  Why do I have a feeling that no kid will ever “drive” one of these.  Instead it will be some sort of decoration for someone with way too much money.
