The AWESOME LEGO Car Creations of Firas Abu-Jaber

Category : Fetishing

head_lego

As artists and kids at heart, we ALL love LEGO.  No matter what time of year LEGO blocks are the best gift for a creative person, often mesmerizing us for hours (or days?) on end.  It’s like catnip for Industrial Designers.  So, when we came across the terrific automotive LEGO creations of Firas Abu-Jaber over at his gallery (CarsParadise) we were thoroughly happy (and mesmerized again).

His work using the standard LEGO block sets is fantastic, creating Lambos, Audis, Ferraris, and semi trucks out of passion for the hobby.  His ability to capture the vehicle’s design using 90-degree rectangles is spot on, from profile and proportion to the interiors.

Pure awesomeness.  My weekend plans are set.

Overshared GM Interiors?

The phrase too much of a good thing is beginning to be used by GM.  The new interior designs look great and the execution is far beyond the typical GM quality you think about.  But now they are running into a different problem.  Actually two.

The first is developing a brand design language.  Now that the quality is up, each brand needs to speak its own language.  When I get into a Buick it should not remind me of the Camaro.

The second is how to interpret a theme amongst a line of vehicles.  The design language in a brand should be familiar to the other vehicles but not be verbatim

Let me show you what I mean….click here Continue Reading

The Future is Here: Color-Changing Cars Now a Possibility

Chevrolet Corvette 2008

One of the “God, I wish we can do this one day” thoughts that I have always had is for the ability of a product to change its color based on the user’s preference (without paint, of course).  Star Trek technology, I also always thought.

In comes Kent Displays to both prove me wrong AND make me as giddy as a school girl who had just won Hannah Montana backstage passes.  Kent Displays has been working on a technology called a “cholesteric liquid crystal display”.  Essentially, this technology is an ultra-thin, damage resistent LCD technology under the moniker of Reflex LCD Electronic Skins.  This tech allows the LCD to take virtually any form and when heat is applied, the image can be changed.  The skin also works similar to an e-ink display in that once a charge is applied, another is not needed until the image is needed to change.

Currently, Kent has available single-layer and dual-layer versions for one-or two-color images, and is working on a full RGB three-layer version for images of incredibly high resolutions and variety.  This basically means that the product’s skin can be any color at any time, depending on your mood or wardrobe.  (The demo video shows a mobile phone changing color).  The best part?  The image/skin can stay the same color, without power, for up to 10 years.

While only aimed at small products for now, tech and car enthusiasts can rejoice for the day when the product’s viability and cost have been adapted for large-format use, such as body panels for the next Ford F150.

Gran Turismo 5

This past week, I made the trek out to E3 (the Electronic Entertainment Expo) in Los Angeles to report for this wonderful blog network of ours. I spent some time with several racing games as well, including both new Gran Turismo games. Check out the trailer above for Gran Turismo 5 for the PS3 from our sister site, SideQuesting.com, and then hit the jump for Gran Turismo PSP for the… PSP.  I had some hands-on time with both, and will report on that a bit later.

Enjoy, and start saving those pennies for the fall!

Coming Out Party!!

It’s official, Fiat is bringing over the 5oo in 18 months!  This is a cool litle car and hopefully will do well.  Any idea on price yet?  Will it compete with a Mini or a Yaris?  Either way it will look great on the road.  The Abarth version shown below is the CDf Favorite.  Who else is excited about his news?

Chrysler will also get their own version.  This will be the smallest car they have designed (at least since I have been around).  Should be a good challenge for the designers to learn how to work with a new proportion.  I believe the Ford Ka is also based off of this platform.  So that is two hits for this package.  Can Chrysler get the third?

The Forgotten Child?

Sure Ford has been busy organizing lay offs, plant closures and the like, but what about bringing out new product?  It is safe to say that all of Ford’s offerings have been redone in the past decade except the poor ‘ol Ranger.  I believe this is still the basic design from when the Ford Ranger Splash debuted back in ’93.  Yes the front clip has worn a few different hats, but the has kept the same pants and underwear.

Now was this a sign of neglect or did someone at the big blue oval see this coming.  The Ranger has not grown in size compared to it competitors the Dakota, Colorado and Tacoma.  So this truck is still actually compact and now has the possibility of getting great fuel economy and be right sized for future buyers.

So I think it is time to bring out the new Ranger.  To show that this doesn’t have to be a big time redesign, CDf has already done the new theme.  It is very simple, bring the new Kuga over and replace the Escape.  Then cut the back off the Kuga, extend the frame and throw a box on it.  Wala, done.  See how easy.  Check it out and let us know if you think it could work.
