Cleveland Institue of Art: Class of 2009 Preview

head_cia2009

The Cleveland Institute of Art (CIA) will be holding its annual Spring Design Show from April 22-24 this year, showcasing some of the brightest young design talent from its graduating class.  The work ethic enforced at CIA in recent years has begun producing some of the best fresh-out-of-school designers in the industry.

That’s why we were thrilled to have a peek at this year’s graduating class and their work.  CIA sent along their 2009 graduating class’s preview, featuring a quick look at the work of the 9 class members.  The format of the booklet is great:  simple & clean, image-filled, and easy to find information on each student.

Follow the link below for some images and the full PDf file (with hi-res images) detailing the class, as well as the invitation to the Spring Show.

(Thanks, Brian!)

This is a really great class over all! This teaser doesn’t do them justice despite how awesome it is (this appears to only show their first semester work). They are by far the best class in a couple years from CIA, and it is a shame that they are graduating in such a tough economic climate considering how strong they are. There are at least 5 of them that are hireable now, maybe as many as 7. One of these guys dropped out unfortunatey, and the first guy isn’t even in the car class, and has a really bad attitude. If there is one guy who looks good on paper (kinda) and just plain awful in reality it is that guy. The rest are all very professional, well spoken, and talented guys. They will get jobs eventually.

Best of luck class of ’09!

Way to throw “that guy” under the bus. He didn’t even graduate yet. Some of the best car designers are ones that do not focus solely on the subject. Creating some distance from you and the industry will allow you to see the market in a much clearer perspective. Kudos to “that guy” for not focusing on cars and still having some sweet designs. As for the attitude, he has two weeks to grow out of it before interviews start….

I don’t disagree that he has nice work. But, even in a good hiring climate, attitude and likeability go a LONG way in the hiring decision, especially in a school that is an underdog and relies on word of mouth and personal recommendations to get you in the door. CIA, like other schools is a 3-year interview. Treat it as such.
