Local Motors Sponsors Interior Design Competition

cbd

Local Motors, that perky little automotive startup that we’ve been reporting on for the last year(ish), has just announced a vehicle interior design competition for their upcoming Rally Fighter vehicle.  The Rally Fighter will be the first vehicle the company produces.

The competition asks designers to create a purpose-built interior for the off-road vehicle, focusing on the basics of what the vehicle needs rather than a plethora of features.  The prizes? A nice $2000USD, $400USD, and $200USD for first to third winners.  The competition runs until Tuesday, 3rd March 2009 (two weeks from today) and voting will be open until Tuesday, 10th March 2009.

Full press release after the break.

For Immediate Release: What’s In Your Car? If it’s a Local Motors Car, the Answer is: Everything You Want, Nothing You Don’t.

Local Motors asks community and customers to choose Rally Fighter interior design.

Local Motors, the new American car company who invites customers to participate in the design of new vehicles, is creating even more opportunity for car lovers to get exactly what they want.

Now, you can participate to help design and choose not only the exterior car body design of your Local Motors vehicle, but also the INTERIOR.

For the first time, Local Motors is hosting an interior car design competition for the company’s first production model, the Rally Fighter. Community member Sangho Kim of California’s ACCD designed the Rally Fighter with global collaboration within the Local Motors community.

“The Rally Fighter is a purpose-built off-road rally racer slated for the American Southwest,” says Local Motors CEO, Jay Rogers. “The interior will be purpose-built as well, and it should have everything you want and nothing you don’t. This competition will generate all sorts of fresh interior ideas and excite the imaginations of designers and customers alike. We will learn customer desires, and we will incorporate these preferences in the production of the Rally Fighter interior design, just as we have for the exterior design.”

The competition details are already posted to the Local Motors website, and submissions will be accepted starting Wednesday, February 25th 2009. The submission deadline is end of day on Tuesday, March 3rd 2009 and community members are invited to vote and choose the winner by Tuesday March 10th 2009.

What will you win if your interior design is chosen? $2,000USD, $400USD, and $200USD for first, second and third place respectively, not to mention a great boost to your portfolio and notoriety, as well as a chance to see your design in a production vehicle. Local Motors creates an even playing field for designers. As Rogers said, “If you can design a car or an interior that our customers want, we will bring it to market, and you will be rewarded. It’s that simple.”
