Sketch P*rn: Audi Edition

Another week, another edition of Sketch P*rn.  My, we have had a ton of them lately!  Leading up to auto show season, we expect to see several more coming through.

This week, we feature work from Audi.  As it begins its next line-up refresh, Audi will be introducing new vehicles and updating older models.  These sketches (ranging from loose marker drawings to tight digital sketches) show some of these.

We start off with a refined theme sketch for an A5 Cabrio.  Nice, loose sketch, focusing on stance and theme.  This sketch shows a few basic principles:  let the white of the paper come through, and have a focal point.  And, huge wheels that are completely out of perspective.

Click the link below to see them all!

Here are a few sketches of a Sportback version of the A5.  Notice the more refined/finished technique employed here, probably for an internal review.  The wheels are cut & paste from the front to the back, though, with only a little tweaking in Photoshop.

The following is an image of an A7 theme.  The energy is terrific, as the sketch was probably done in less than an hour.  Strong lines define what could possibly be the updated Audi aesthetic.  Nice emotion, coupled with bold color contrast, make this a pretty sketch.

This sketch is of the upcoming A8 refresh.  Bold graphics at the front add a considerable growl to the vehicle’s image, and provide a dramatic departure from the often-conservative Audi upper-level vehicles.  There was considerable masking done to achieve an almost “Illustrator” look to the sketch, as seen in the tight lines amd bezier curves.  This sketch is employing the now-familiar cut-and-paste of the set of sketches, with wheels and even logo utilizing excessive Photoshop copying and perspective tweaking.

This last series of images is probably what makes our mouths water the most: form development taken to a thumbnail size, and understanding of section and lines and their effect on the vehicle.  The development of the A7 in these images shows a lot of love and dedication to details.  While the hot renderings will get your work framed, these types of sketch pages will get you the job.
