Car Design Fetish

Design From the Mouths of Designers.

Zoom Zoom Zoom…..Here comes the Mazda 6!!!

Man oh Man!  Mazda has had some seriously consistent form language in their vehicles and their new Mazda 6 is no exception.  A severe departure from their previous model, Mazda has upped the anti and has progressed to a fresh, aggressively elegant design but stays true to their own brand image.

Bearing a strong resemblance to the 2009 Mercedes S class, Mazda does a great job of pushing the boundaries of their own design by offering  grace and elegance  featured in upscale competitors .  It’s not to say that it is perfect…in fact it has quite a few flaws…but we’ll get to that in a bit.

The front end is well sculpted.  The surfaces are clean, detailing is simple and the front end has a powerful stance due to the pronounced shoulders at the front.  Unfortunately you have the same type of character line that is seen on most cars today.  The rear of the vehicle is nicely done.  The tail lamps seem to complement the aggressive tone of the vehicle with it’s sharp edgy shape.

So what happened with this interior?  It’s not too bad but not as strong as its exterior.

The vents look to be the same as the previous years and the insert on the front seats have this wrinkled texture to it.  Not too keen on the actual look but it may be more impressive in person.  The overall seats lend themselves to a bland and uninspiring look.  No color breaks to create any visual interests.  Same goes for the overall interior color.    The Instrument Panel design is a little un-inspirational.  There are quite a few vehicles that have a similar look to their IP’s.  On the plus side, the craftsmanship has been executed well.  Nice tight fits, minimal gaps for a higher quality look.  The center radio/cd player resembles a little bit of the Mazda RX 8 with it’s circular theme in the center but with a bit more sophistication and elegance.

Overall.  I think Mazda did a pretty great job.  Ok…there were some issues with the interior but nothing that would overshadow its overall gracefulness.  Bottom line is the vehicle has presence!  It will definitely turn heads.  I know it did mine.
