Destroying an American Icon

Baseball, apple pie and Chevrolet are all things you associate with the great U.S.  Another big one is our military.  When you think of weapons, tools for the military, what comes to mind…….Hummer.  In my opinion Hummer is one of the great American Icons and is a great way to tie our troops and their contributions to our everyday life.  You can not help but think of them whenever climbing in and out or looking out those squatty windows of a Hummer.

Just like we support our troops, why can’t we support our brands.  This whole talk of selling off Hummer really pisses me off.  I know this is now a global economy, but an American brand owned by a company from India…c’mon.  I guess we should get used to this kind of thing.  I just heard that Budweiser was sold and is now owned by a Belgium Company.  Sure the Belgiums make a better beer, but Bud, the King of Beers is as American as mullets.

Back to Hummer, GM has a gold mine waiting to happen.  Yes, I know about the whole gas thing but hear me out.  The most profitable vehicles for the US companies were trucks and SUV’s.  Why would you abandon this market?  I know we have become a disposable economy, where it is easier to just buy a new one rather than fixing the broken one.  I didn’t know that way of thinking went for companies as well.  So Hummer isn’t doing well right now, ah lets get rid of it and make it someone else’s problem.  How about you think with your big head and not your little one.

If trucks and SUV’s are where we excel, then lets hold onto that and develop some efficient ones.  You think, well Hummer has a long way to go, maybe in the public’s perception of the brand.  The reality is that they are better than many trucks out there and even better for the environment than the Toyota Prius.  I am sure we all read that article.  If GM really wanted to make the headlines, reinvent the Hummer brand.

Hummer becomes all “green” like it should of always been since it is meant to live in the woods.  Efficient, clean and will not harm the environment.  There is no other brand that will make more of a statement.  Of course the technology developed would then be able to transfer through all the other brands.  The Volt is great and all but there are plenty of efficient small cars and sedans out there.  Put the technology where it will really make a difference.  And don’t say people are not buying trucks and SUV’s anymore.  If you build them and “market/ advertise” them in the “right way” people will come back.  I will come back.

Hummer has more potential than any of there brands for new vehicle development.  I would hate to see all that lost and given to a company half way around the world who has no appreciation or connection to the brand.  This is not a Jaguar with a lost heritage that can be passed around.  Just like we continue to support our troops overseas the same should be said for the one American brand that represents them.

From CDf we say thank you troops for your service to this Country and don’t get too upset with GM for selling off your icon.  They can only see 3 feet in front of them.  Maybe you should give them some of your fancy binoculars.
