Crit: Alfa Romeo MiTo

alfa_head

This week, Alfa took the wraps off of its highly-anticipated production car, the Me Too MiTo.  How does this little baby stack up to competition from Mini and the Fiat 500?

First and foremost, the vehicle  won’t be overly powerful.  While a 6-speed manual will be a fun necessity that the vehicle brings, it will only come at 78-, 120-, and 155-hp variety of engines.  Hey, it’s a small car… not a racer.

How do the aesthetics hold up?  Read on for the full crit…

Exterior

The overall proportion of the vehicle is nice.  The forward slope gives a “slammed” front-end to the stance, which is excentuated by the extended wheel arches.  The body lines all lead to the iconic Alfa triangular grill.  This is where things get a little hairy:  The grille appears extremely mis-proportioned to the rest of the vehicle.  If it were slightly bigger, it would set up the rest of the vehicle details well.  With it’s small-ish size, there is no real focal point on the car; nothing that really says “wow, this is unique.”

While nicely designed, the vehicle is actually pretty simple and isn’t anything especially new.  It is a nice clean solution to the small-car category.  In fact, the only things that may be remembered about this exterior (apart from the grille) are the headlamps and taillamps, which look like styled Mini Cooper lights.

Interior

This is really where the MiTo shines.  The interior (although often appearing cluttered and overstyled) is crafted extremely well.  The details hold up, there are minimized gaps, and unique material utilization abounds.  The content found here is often found on pricier vehicles, yet Alfa is able to pull it off on a small car.

The seating is beautifullly detailed, carrying over typical Alfa heritage themes into the MiTo.  A little bit of history is never a bad thing.

Overall

The vehicle is a nice creation from Alfa.  It fits in well into their portfolio, and hopefully if we play nice it’ll show its (tiny) face here when Alfa finally makes their triumphant comeback.
