BMW Gina: Redefining What A Car Is
This, my friends, is CAR DESIGN. This is what it is all about. Thinking completely outside of the box, outside of the wheels, outside of what makes modern vehicle design so conventional. This, my friends, is the BMW Gina Light Visionary Model. And truly, this is CAR DESIGN at it’s greatest.
In what may be the biggest leap in design thinking in a long time, BMW has broken the mold with the Gina. It has made vehicle design COOL AGAIN. And it did it all with a vehicle whose concept is not far-fetched, not new, just right. And we are oh-so-thankful!
The Gina is intended to be an in-house vision model, something all designers know and love: a vision (direction) for where Bimmer’s styling and design will head. The much-maligned flame surfacing has sudden taken a spectacular turn into stardom.

What makes this vehicle so special is that it takes sheet metal away completely. Utilizing a Michealangelo-esque method of draping material over a form to create a shape, the Gina is able to be sexy and lightweight. Like a Victoria’s Secret model stepping onto the runway wearing a full head-to-toe silk dress, the vehicle entices with what you DON’T see… what is hidden there behind the thin curtain, shaped by undulating forms.

BMW has played Frankenstein and made this care come alive… literally. There are no visible parting lines, seams, or joints (sans the door). In fact, the only way you can tell that there are separate pieces on this vehicle is by it’s ability to “wink”. Yes true believers, this car has several “pockets” and slits designed to cover headlamps, gauges, instruments, lights, etc simply by opening and closing, mimicking winking. The slit on the hood is aligned vertically to pop apart and reveal the engine underneath.

Sexy? Yes. Extremely. But what’s even more sexy is the way in which the doors hinge open. The separation between the doors and the front quarter is hidden under the stretched fabric, causing it to fold and shear in ways that this blogger shouldn’t dare try writing, or face the penalty of having some FCC ruling materialize for writing things that are just. too. sexy.
Check out the rest of this incredible concept, and let’s pray to the heavens that this has a lasting effect on the auto industry.
