NAIAS Fetish Wrap-Up
We have had a few days now to digest what all went on last week and thought we would give our “best of” for the show. The funny thing is, after having a long weekend not thinking about the show, we couldn’t even come up with our favorites. To say the least the show this year was underwhelming. Nothing really sticks in our head as jaw dropping or I can’t wait to see it. Don’t get me wrong, all of the concepts looked really “good.”
With the industry in such tough times one could expect the conservative uproach to concept cars, but what better way to create some excitement and show that you still “got it.”
Anyway on to the awards……
Best Concept
Mazda Furai
This was a no brainer. The amazing surfacing whether you like it or not was fresh to see. This was a great car for Mazda to end their “flow” theme on.
Concept that MUST be built
Mitsubishi Concept RA
This is a great car to revive the eclipse and bring in Mitsu’s new front end. When I look at this I see Hot Wheels all the way. The sinister face, exposed engine cover, and sexy hips makes this a twenty-something’s dream. I know a lot of you are saying it should have been something else, I am sure I will address your comments on below.
Best New Production Vehicle
This is Dodge’s bread and butter and they did a great job updating it. They are changing the truck category with an all new suspension, interior quality (yes, I said quality), and storage areas that will take you all day to find them all. It looks slick to with a Charger influenced front end and crisp lines making this truch the emotional one out of the bunch. And that ain’t a bad thing. Did you know you can fit like 150 aluminum cans. That makes up 6 cases of beer beverages. I can’t wait to tailgate with this guy.
Biggest Ass
Chrysler ecoVoyager
This was a tough one between the eco and the Lincoln MKT. We think the Lincoln’s squared off rear looked more in shape when compared to the eco’s curvy lines making for a saggy looking ass. This award is really up to your personal preference. BTW, this car looked a lot better in person, but I can leave it at the show.
Most Disappointing Concept
Jeep Renegade
Even the name was an easy way out. Jeep usually has the best concepts, but i guess you can’t win every year. The surfaces and details are too simple making this Jeep look like it just came out of a college spring show. No offense if the designer just came out of school. There is a start of something here, just go back and finish it.
Best “Fake”Concept
By Fake we mean that they are called a concept even though we know they will one day come to life is some form or another. We couldn’t narrow it down to just one so we need your comments to pic the winner.
The Cadillac and Passat should stay the same, and I am not sure about the Hummer. There has been talk of an H4, Wrangler competitor for awhile. There is a good mix here of clean sleek lines, function oriented, and sexy curves to choose from. Props to GM for having 2 out of 3 great cars on the horizon.
Last but not least….
The Butter Face Award
Toyota A-Bat
While this truck had great functionality and a cool interior the face just killed it all.
Be sure to come back through the week to look for our Podcast talking about this years Detroit’s Show.

definately agree on the furai…it blew me away along with taiki
personally i liked the cadillac…the hummer looks way more “real concept” than the cadillac…and the passat just looks like any other production vw to me.
Furai - YES!
The CTS coupe gets my vote, but I still love the volumes of the Passat CC.
(but the brick of a front clip on the CTS-V is a disappointment.)
The H-X had what the Renegade lacked - sweet, juicy details!
Toyota A-Bat - cool sketches, less impressive execution, but what an interior!
