Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board: Apple Reveals MacBook Air

mac-head

Another MacWorld, another jaw-dropping announcement by Steve Jobs. This time, Apple introduces the MacBook Air, the new ultra-thin addition to the best-selling line of laptops.

It’s difficult to testify at how utterly gorgeous of a product this is. The aluminum case reminds us that this is, in fact, an Apple. The new form factor that Apple introduced in the iPod Classic is here: the subtle curvature of the underside, the softened edges, and an almost tear-drop shaped side profile give this laptop a great look and feel.

Read on for full info, pics, and all the Apple-y fun you can handle.

The Air is as light as it sounds: just 3lbs… meaning that you will have no problem holding it with one hand. The screen makes the recently announced thin OLED from Sony appear so-yesterday (or last week, actually). The multi-touch interface mimics the same in the iPhone and iPod Touch. A little door on the side hides a USB port, headphone jac, and mini-DVI port. The Air is powered by the now-standard MagSafe port on the opposite side.

One feature we love is the backlit keyboard with built-in light sensor (also available on the MacBook Pro). When you’re in the dark, the keyboard adjusts its backlighting to become more visible. Our only gripe may be the fact that there is no user-replaceable battery; it’s iPod-like and dealer-replaced.

It’s available now for pre-order, and should arrive in 2-3 weeks. Visit Apple.com for info.
