This week’s episode focuses on the subject of the changing landscape of design aesthetics in the Automotive world. We touch on European, American, and Japanese differentiation… all while throwing back a few more beers.
Join us for the continuation of the last episode.
Yes, we were sneaky and recorded two episodes at once.

dude.. this pod cast was wayyy too polarized.. whoever the guess speaker was, clearly worked for an American Oem. Please for the love of god, next time you guys decide to talk about “design” please get someone with a good overall opinion of global design intead of some dude who works for an american company. Its just my opinion, but maybe the guy should look out of his box and see thats american design needs a bit of a revival, stop being so stubborn. All the talent in the world wont cure stubborness. I know making this comment wont get me any good karma, I was going to just let it go, but this guy is one cocky designer. I havent learned anything more about good design, I just learned more of why american cars look the way they do.
Leinitis aka “chubby in the corner” is my hero…
pissed- are you serious? the guest speaker had good to say about both import and domestic, as well as negative. I believe I heard a lot of negative on Pontiac specifically as well as Chrysler, Jeep and Ford. In fact he said that Mazda (import) needs to teach ford (domestic) His final thought was that the Fiat 500 is a great benchmark for great design and materials in an affordable car…is it that you are a huge supporter of imports (i.e. Toyota or Honda) and not domestics, therefore any positive comments for domestics is biased or “polar”? Give them a break, there were many interesting things said in this podcast by all the guys (if you took the time to listen to all 45 minutes of it) and they all have different backgrounds and opinions to offer. But since I AM a domestic supporter, keep up the good work Toyota, every blown tranny and tailgate that breaks off opens the door for Domestics to retake there place. Side note: One of the guys said Buick tied Lexus as the top spot in Consumer Reports Reliability…this is true…Lexus held this spot for over a decade and Buicks of several years ago have now caught them. Get good design with the now much improved reliability of Ford and GM and Domestics will do fine. Also, Consumer Reports who for many years would list Toyota as a reliable and top pick did so without testing there cars based on their years of great cars and the perception that came along with it…now that they can’t seem to launch a car without massive recalls, CR has announced that it will no longer recommend them on perception alone…food for thought Pissed. Also, keep in mind that this is a BLOG…so don’t expect to get completely unbiased info, they could straight up lie through their teeth if they so choose, I think they are just trying to offer non-designers an oppurtunity to hear from professionals in the field…pretty cool if you ask me!
wow comments are actually being left for a change…I think Pissed and Get Pissed should fight it out in the next pod cast…now that would be entertainment!
I just want to say that no import or domestic automotive designers were hurt in the creation of this podcast.
To be more relevant to the topic at hand, I would say that people have their opinions on design, which is what makes us as designers so important. Just because someone does or doesn’t work for one company or another makes things interesting on this and other podcasts and allows for a great variation of opinion.
We hope to get more designers in on the podcasts in the future… it’s always great to hear from people in the field besides us.
If anyone would like to be on our future podcasts, feel free to drop us a line and give us your opinion as well. You can email us at cardesignfetish@gmail.com
Thanks for listening to the podcast!
I am no supporter of neither import or domestic. I am a supporter of design in general, I am not biased either way, I can care less if it is a corvette or a GTR, if its well designed, its well designed, I didnt mean to offend anyone, I was just hoping that on a blog on a car DESIGN website, there would be more talks about good design vs bad design in a bit more professional and unbiased way rather than comparing specific cars like the malibu and the altima ect. ect… and to be honest, there is nothing wrong with domestic cars, I just think in comparison with whats coming out lately, they are a bit behind, thats all. I think when an american car is done right, it does it damn well! but with all that said, design should be talked about a bit more carefully. I also understand that this is a blog and people are entitled to their opinions, I love the podcast, but i think the last one was a bit polarizing(by polarizing I mean that when I listen, I can clearly tell the personalities and what they are into) I feel like I am listening to car design students in their freshman years. When listening to a podcast like this one talking about design trends, I think it should be just that and nothing else about specifics. But again no hard feelings, Its just my opinion after all. props to spending the time teaching us a thing or two.
Not a problem… Your points are well taken.
We don’t try and consider ourselves the be-all-end-all of design… just some designers in the design world experiencing the same things that the rest of you all are. We are all affected in different ways. Some of us see the domestics as making their big design comeback, while some of us still see them as far behind.
Either way, we’ll do our best to give our honest impressions of design as we see it. I think our vehicle critiques on the site are pretty well set, getting into great detail on design. Our podcasts are set up to allow more than one opinion to come through. And, they may not always be the popular one.
Thanks for listening, and keep the comments and ideas coming!

Hey bumbfangle………. Chris Bangel is a GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
How dare you, the bolts of wrath from the eye of the Bangel will strike down apon you…………
But seriously, he designed the Z3, which is one of my favorite cars. He also managed the Z4, which in my opinion, brought car design into a new era of surfacing. He is a visionary, and I think what we are seeing is just one step into the future of BMW, this is their 1st attempt, it will only get bettrt
