texting

Driving is dangerous enough while eating, drinking, smoking, singing, talking, etc…. now everyone is texting. Probably not a shock to anyone but some of the numbers below will put your eyes back on the road.. or screen.

Most Americans say ban text-messaging while driving,
but a majority admit to doing it, according to new poll

A majority of Americans think there should be a ban on text-messaging while behind the wheel of an automobile, according to a new study from Harris Interactive. Ninety-one percent said sending text messages while driving is as dangerous as driving after having a couple of alcoholic drinks. However, 57 percent admit to doing it.

The Harris survey, which was commissioned by mobile messaging service Pinger Inc., found that 89 percent of respondents believe “texting” while driving is dangerous and should be outlawed. But 66 percent of the adults surveyed who drive and use text messaging told pollsters that they had read text messages or e-mails while driving. And 57 percent admitted to sending them.

In May 2007, the state of Washington passed the first ban in the United States on text-messaging while driving and at least six other states, including New York, California and Florida, are considering similar legislation, according to Pinger officials.

The Harris survey found that men and women sent text messages while driving at equal rates, but that younger people did so more frequently. Sixty-four percent of those who admitted to sending text messages while driving were aged 18 to 34, while 6 percent were 55 or older. The poll surveyed 2,049 U.S. adults from June 29 to July 3.
