Transforming my BMW M Coupe

So, I have had my car for over a month now, and I have upgraded small things like sound system, ICE, did the iPod link, and a few other little details on the car. This car is beautiful don’t get me wrong I love the M Shoe, but there are some details that BMW got wrong, so I have decided to fix them. I have decided to remove some of the uglier exterior detailing to truly let the voluptuous body show a little better, you know remove some of the visual clutter. So here it goes.

1. Stock M Coupe rear end, as you can see a little cluttered

2. My quick sketch of what I was thinking, ( those are 3 small LED’s implanted into the Rondula, you need a rear plate light to be legal)

3. Cut and weld

4. The key is to use as little body filler as possible, if I was a metalsmith, I could have done this with no filler, I am not

5. While I was at it, I removed the M emblem inset in the fender vent, and also removed the chrome detail, it will now be all body color

6. Filled and painted the recess

7. Modified the plate bracket by removing the ugly stock liscense plate lights, and remolding the contour to fit more snugly on the deck lid

8. This is what it looks like in flat black. I did not paint the hatch yet or replace the BMW rondula, because of #9

9. I am still longing for a cleaner rear hatch, so I did some searching and found this…. Note this is a stock Z3 bumper, my plate opening would be much tighter then this picture.

Let me know what you guys and gals think, keep it on the hatch, or move it to the bumper? I am on the fence as of right now, will have to do some sketching before I make any decesions.

Oh almost forgot this one. I turned a smaller stubbie antenna on the lathe at work, the huge radio control car antenna had to go check it.

I see a car not for what it is when it rolls off the factory floor, but what it can be after I work my touches into it. This is just the start, I will post more as the weeks, months and years of this project move along. I hope you enjoy the process as much as I do.

I am always a fan of removing things that are only there because Ralph Nader says they should be (i.e. rear plate illumination). I do think the you should eventually move the plate to the rear fascia.

The only mod I’d question is moving the plate to the bumper, but you’re doing a good job, and I’m sure it’ll look good when you’re done. Keep up the good work…

Move the plate to the bumper. That way you can have the clean hatch. Besides, illumination in the bumper seems like it would be a lot easier than a roundel light.

You removed material from the stcok antenna?

How does the radio reception compare to the stock size?

I want to get a smaller one but I don’t want cheap looking.

Everything else looks cool!

I like the plate on the hatch because it leaves the bumper fascia smooth making the whole rear end look cleaner. Good Job!
