Open Source Car Design.

Open source car design has been taking root on the web for a while now, and I felt the need to finally comment on it.

Click here to check out some truly bad car design. (Download the PDF it is worth it)

Just a few short comments……. Designers go to school to get a degree because design is not easy. Not everyone can design. Engineers go to school for the same reason. Do I want to be driving in a car designed and engineered by the public???? Hell no, never, not in a million years. We all work with professionals who are pretty specific to automobiles. Why is this? It takes many experts to design and engineer a car that is not only beautiful, but safe, efficient, advanced, comfortable, etc. I am all for change, but it will take some time before I accept a car built by the public.

While I may buy an open source designed and built radio, I will not be driving an open sourced car.

Example below of one of the better open sourced designs………

true, lousy art skills….but don’t miss the bigger point — if some creative people can collaborate informally this way, maybe some good ideas can result. of course everyone needs to protect themselves (intellectual property and all that), but who knows what could lead from “virtual” to reality this way?

good points, the open source car is still in it’s infant stages, it will take some time to truely develop.
